Angelina Jolie Worked Less During Brad Pitt Divorce Because She ‘Had a Lot of Healing to Do’
Angelina Jolie has started choosing the roles she takes in movies based on the commitment she needs to make to a feature. The actress recently told Vogue in a new cover story that she began accepting less roles “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.”
The reason, she explained, was that she needed to work on herself — especially amid her contentious divorce from Brad Pitt. “We had a lot of healing to do,” she said, inexplicably speaking in the plural. “We’re still finding our footing.”

The past decade, which included a marriage to and split from Pitt, has been especially hard on her. She filed for divorce in September 2016 after Pitt allegedly physically and verbally abused her and two of the couple’s six kids on a flight from France to Los Angeles.
In the past eight years, Jolie has starred in only two movies: 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and 2021’s Those Who Wish Me Dead. She’s taken smaller roles in Eternals and Come Away and done voice work on The One and Only Ivan and Kung Fu Panda 4.
Jolie said she’s still dealing with the emotional aftermath.
“I feel a bit down these days,” she said. “I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.” Regarding her new fashion line, Atelier Jolie, she said she had to do a lot of soul searching. “Now I wonder if I don’t know what my style is because I’m still understanding who I am at 48,” she said. “I guess I’m in transition as a person.”
