An angry girlfriend poured a kettle of boiling water over her boyfriend’s mate after the two men returned late from a casino on Valentine’s Day last year, the Old Bailey has heard.

Konstancija Tairova, 26, a waitress, is accused of scalding Edas Juozenas after she argued with boyfriend Adomas Marengolas.

Juozenas tried to intervene as the pair argued, the court heard.

Prosecutor Molly Pinkus, opening the case against Tairova, said her relationship with Mr Marengolas was on the verge of breaking down, and she said Mr Juozenas was acting as a peacemaker as they rowed.

“Mr Juozenas became tired and lay down on the sofa bed for a few minutes with his eyes open,” she said.

“Suddenly he was shocked to feel boiling water in his face. He put his right arm up to cover his face as water was coming onto it.

“That’s when he saw Miss Tairova standing there with the kettle. He jumped off and screamed out in pain.”

Juozenas told the court that “she did not like the fact that Adomas and I were going out – she was angry, she never liked it when he was going out anywhere”.

But Peter Fallen, defending Tairova, said that Juozenas attacked her and ripped her clothes and she had already fled from the flat before he was burned.

She also claims her boyfriend and Mr Juozenas had been drinking heavily that night and taking cocaine in the build-up to the incident.

“The truth is you were drunk and high on drugs and so was Adomas,” said Fallen.

Juozenas was taken to Newham General Hospital for treatment to burns on his right wrist and blisters on his nose.

Tairova, from Hounslow, denies assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The trial continues.
