The RCMP in Placentia is dealing with a severe case of animal abuse involving 27 cats.

Police were alerted last week by a veterinarian in St. John's who treated two cats that were brought in by a Fox Harbour resident.

Both of the animals were drastically emaciated, dehydrated and jaundiced. One of the cats also had burns on its paws and had to be put down.

RCMP and the St. John's SPCA got a search warrant and found 25 more cats in distress at the home in Fox Harbour.

The animals were turned over to the SPCA and are receiving treatment.

RCMP said charges are pending against the homeowner.
