‘Anne of Green Gables’ book covers from around the world: the good, the bad & the blonde

“Anne of Green Gables” by Lucy Maud Montgomery is not Canada’s alone: Anne Shirley’s red braids and plucky attitude resonate around the world.

This cover is from a 1978 Japanese edition. The direct translation is “Anne of the Red Hair.”

This first edition, first impression, of the book is very rare because “it wasn’t immediately apparent what a hit it was going to be,” said Simon Lloyd, university archivist and special collections librarian at the University of P.E.I.’s Robertson Library. The book was originally printed in 1908 by Boston publisher L.C. Page. The image of a woman seemingly much older than Anne had previously appeared in The Delineator, an American women’s magazine.

Anne’s impact beyond North America started right away. This 1909 Swedish edition was printed the year following the first run in English. The collections at the University of Prince Edward Island alone include translations into 20 languages.

The book had staying power in Sweden. This edition of an unusually grouchy looking Anne is from 1941. Lloyd said Anne influenced Sweden’s Astrid Lindgren, whose redheaded heroine Pippi Longstocking made her first appearance in 1945.

This Australian edition from 1927 features a still image from the 1919 American silent movie version of “Anne of Green Gables,” starring Mary Miles Minter. Minter was later caught up in a scandal involving the director’s murder, which tarnished her good-girl image. “It’s a long story, but her career was kind of cut down in its prime by that scandal,” Lloyd said.

This Icelandic edition is from 1998. The country’s original translation cut about 30 per cent of the text, to the point where it was difficult to tell whether Anne lived on an island. A complete translation has been published since then.

This Slovenian edition is also from 1998.

This Turkish edition from 1983 is a “not terribly good artistic rendering of a photograph still from the BBC television production of “Anne of Green Gables” in the 1970s,” Lloyd said.

This Hebrew edition from 1974 is “very dark and of course we have the famous snow-capped mountains of Prince Edward Island,” Lloyd said. “Not very attractive, but interesting.”

This lovely 2001 edition was printed by a Swedish non-governmental organization in Arabic for use in the schools of the Palestinian Authority. “It’s a beautiful cover,” Lloyd said.

This 1981 Italian edition’s cover feeds on the popularity of a 1979 anime version of Anne made in Japan and popular in Italy. “You see the Italian edition from the 1980s has a very bright, almost cartoonish look to it and that reflects the impact of that broadcast,” Lloyd said.

This 1964 edition from France sports a very French looking Anne, with the title “Anne and happiness.” “Very stylish,” Lloyd said.

Here’s what is likely the most infamous Anne cover of all time, with Anne Shirley sporting blonde hair and a decided lack of freckles in 2013. This was never an actual printed cover, however — just an online image grab used on a self-publishing site. Anybody can publish the books, which have been in the public domain since 1993.

And, finally, here is one of the best Anne covers, from Poland in 1956. “Although it’s somewhat impressionistic, the artistic rendering of Anne as she arrives is quite sweet and innocent and faithful to the original book, both on the cover and on the inside,” Lloyd said.
