Annie Awards: ‘Klaus’ & Netflix Dominate Animation Awards – Winners List

Will it be Christmas in February at the Oscars? Netflix’s holiday tale Klaus left the competition snowbound at tonight’s 47th annual Annie Awards, winning seven trophies including the marquee Best Animated Feature.

Overall, the night was a showcase for Netflix, which lapped the field with 19 Annie wins fueled by Klaus, I Lost My Body and Love, Death & Robots. The streaming giant also won a pair of awards for series that wrapped this year: BoJack Horseman and Tuca & Bertie.

The Klaus wipeout throws the Academy Awards race for a loop, as Netflix’s first original animated feature won all seven categories for which it was nominated. Director and co-writer Sergio Pablos’ film dominated over the Big 3 studio mega-grossing sequels — Disney’s Frozen 2, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4 — which mostly were left scratching their toon heads despite a combined $3 billion worldwide take.

Frozen 2 did manage a pair of wins tonight, including one for Josh Gad’s voice performance as Olaf, and How to Train Your Dragon took one. But Buzz, Woody and the Toy Story gang went home empty-handed from UCLA’s Royce Hall, as did Laika’s Missing Link, which won the Golden Globe for Animated Feature three weeks ago and was up for the same prize at the Annies.

Before presenting the top two awards, Christopher Lloyd said, “2019 will be remembered as the year the limits for feature animation were shattered.”

Starring Jason Schwartzman, J.K. Simmons and Rashida Jones, Klaus is the story of a selfish postman and a reclusive toymaker who form an unlikely friendship, delivering joy to a cold, dark town that desperately needs it. Along with Best Animated Feature, the film won for direction, editing, storyboarding, production design, character animation and character design.

So just how will tonight’s Klaus beatdown factor into a certain widely watched trophy show happening on February 9? Well, since the Academy Awards’ Best Animated Feature category was launched in 2002, 13 of the 18 winners of the Annies’ top feature prize – and six of the past eight – went on to claim Oscar gold. That includes last year’s Annie and Oscar king, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The Best Indie Feature award went to Xilam Animation’s I Lost My Body, which won the Critics’ Week Award at Cannes and was acquired by Netflix soon after. It also will vie for the Animated Feature Oscar along with Klaus, Missing Link, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Toy Story 4.

The top-grossing movie of 2019 — indeed of all time — got some Annies love tonight as Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame took the prize for Best Character Animation, Live Action.

The biggest winner on the TV side tonight was the Netflix series Love, Death & Robots, which took four trophies — more than any project other than Klaus. Multiple TV winners tonight also included Disney Mickey Mouse and Carmen Sandiego.

The TV voice acting prize went to Fox’s Bob’s Burgers.

The show opened with a tribute to Who Framed Roger Rabbit animator Richard Williams, who died in August and to whom the ceremony was dedicated.

The June Foray Award was presented to Jeanette Bonds, writer, independent animator and co-founder and director of GLAS Animation, and the Ub Iwerks Award went to Jim Blinn, the computer scientist who first became widely known for his work as a computer graphics expert at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Three Winsor McCay Award recipients were chosen this year: Satoshi Kon (posthumously), the Japanese film director, animator, screenwriter and manga artist; Henry Selick, the stop-motion director-producer-writer who helmed The Nightmare Before Christmas and others; and Ron Clements & John Musker, animators, animation directors, screenwriters and producers of one of the Walt Disney Animation Studio’s leading director teams.
