Annual Archives Week in Saskatchewan reminder history is important
Saskatchewan archivist Cameron Hart signs off every email with a reminder from Sir Arthur Doughty, a Dominion Archivist and Keeper of the Public Records in the early 1900s.
"Of all our national assets, Archives are the most precious; they are the gift of one generation to another and the extent of our care of them marks the extent of our civilization," the quote reads.
This week is annual Archives Week in the province and Hart said archives are extremely important.
"What we keep in archives is primary sources; it's irreplaceable," he said.
Hart explained there is a difference between libraries, museums and archives. Libraries keep published materials like books, newspapers and magazines, while archives "keep the stuff the author used to write those books.
"What we have is very important," he said.
The Saskatchewan Archives Council has over 60 members across the province from large archives at universities to small ones in villages and towns.
