Annual vehicle inspections important for all vehicles, says minister

P.E.I. Transportation Minister Paula Biggar has dismissed the notion that annual inspections are not necessary for new vehicles.

MLA Bush Dumville asked Biggar in question period why the inspections are necessary for new vehicles.

Biggar said inspections on new cars are important in looking out for recalls.

"A number of years ago there was recalls on a steering system," she said.

"So we do enforce an annual inspection of cars to ensure when something like that is recalled that those are taken in and they are fixed, so that we can ensure the roads are safe when you're meeting another vehicle and something doesn't malfunction."

Dumville was proposing a grace period of two or three years on annual inspections when a vehicle is purchased new.

He said that would reduce costs for individuals who are spending more to buy a new car.
