Another West Nile case is confirmed, bringing Miami-Dade’s 2020 total to 55

The Florida Department of Health in Miami is warning people to remain vigilant when it comes to protecting themselves from mosquitoes.

That’s because there has been yet another case of the virus, bringing the county’s 2020 total to 55.

On Monday, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County confirmed the locally transmitted case and said the county remains under “a mosquito-borne illness alert.”

The virus, which is spread through the bite of a mosquito, was first detected in the county this year in May when there were two cases.

Those who are infected by West Nile often don’t feel sick, but some develop a fever and symptoms such as headache, pain and fatigue.

There is currently no vaccine or treatment for West Nile.

The health department stresses that the public should “remain diligent in their personal mosquito protection efforts,” by removing standing water and covering skin with clothing and repellent.
