Anthony Germain to join Here & Now as co-host

Anthony Germain, one of Canada's pre-eminent broadcasters, is taking on a new assignment, as the new co-host of CBC Newfoundland and Labrador's Here & Now.

Germain, who has been hosting the St. John's Morning Show since 2011, will join Debbie Cooper and Ryan Snoddon when the fall season starts in early September.

"I'm completely thrilled to get the opportunity to work with Debbie, Ryan and the rest of the pros who makeHere & Now," said Germain.

"In our changing media world, suppertime TV news shows face enormous challenges. I'm excited to be a new member of a team that will keenly face those challenges and attract an even bigger audience."

Germain's move to Here & Now marks a pivotal moment in his career, which has taken him from Parliament Hill to hot spots around the globe, reporting for both radio and television.

Before moving to St. John's, Germain had been CBC's foreign correspondent in China for five years, reporting largely from Beijing and Shanghai.

Germain's assignments have also taken him to war zones and powerful stories in such countries as Haiti, Libya and South Africa.

During his career, Germain has been recognized with journalism awards for investigative reports for radio and television.

Germain is a former host of CBC Radio's weekly show on politics, The House, and is a former host of the morning show in Ottawa.

Strong news judgment

Peter Gullage, executive producer for CBC News in Newfoundland and Labrador, said Germain will bring formidable journalistic skills toHere & Now, one of the most popular supperhour news programs in Canada.

"Anthony is a rare kind of journalist," said Gullage. "He has a strong news sense, he's determined to get to the bottom of something and he's one of the best interviewers in the business."

Gullage added, "He's also got a great sense of humour. It's going to be fun to see him with Debbie and Ryan every night."

Last July, Germain co-anchored CBC's live television broadcast of the centennial anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel.

In the meantime, a search is underway to find a new host to join Krissy Holmes at the St. John's Morning Show. CBC hopes to have a new host in place for the fall launch.

Germain will continue to host the St. John's Morning Show through the summer.
