Anti-Brexit MEP raises £11k to hang huge 'we still love EU' banner on White Cliffs of Dover
An anti-Brexit MEP has fundraised more than £11,000 to hang a 150 square metre “we still love EU” banner on top of the White Cliffs of Dover.
Liberal Democrat Antony Hook said the banner would “send a strong message to the world that we still love Europe” when the UK leaves the EU on 31 January.
On his Crowdfunder page, Mr Hook, the MEP for South East England, said: “We might be leaving, but whether you voted leave or remain we still want good relations with our nearest neighbours in the future.
“Our banner will be 150 square metres - which is huge. We're employing a professional drone pilot to capture the footage. ITV and other channels say they will broadcast the images. But we need to raise the cash for the banner and the drone.
“If the Brexiters can raise £10,000s [for the Big Ben bong fund] then we can do this. Will you help send a powerful signal to the world that we are NOT just the land of Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and Tommy Robinson?”

As of 3pm on Tuesday, 728 people had donated £11,633 to the campaign, surpassing its initial £10,000 target.

As a result, Mr Hook promised the extra money would be used to create “an exciting extra demonstration”, with details still to be revealed.
The fundraising campaign to make Big Ben bong at the 11pm departure time on 31 January had nearly reached £270,000 at 2pm on Tuesday, though the government is unlikely to allow it. If this is the case, the money will instead be donated to Help for Heroes.
