'My head hit the concrete': Woman survives 'surreal' hit and run in East Kildonan
A Winnipeg woman is still reeling after a bizarre hit and run that sent her to hospital.
"All I kept saying was, 'Who hits somebody and drives away?'" said Brandi Delaine, 23. "It's honestly very surreal."
Delaine and some friends were headed to the beach Tuesday at about 1:30 p.m. when she was hit by the vehicle near Munroe Avenue and Watt Street.
A 53-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily harm.
He was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
Delaine said it all started when she honked at a distracted driver in the middle of pulling onto Munroe.
"He was too busy staring at the person on the side of the road, so he didn't see me, so I stopped and honked," she said.
Soon after, she tried to pass the other driver and felt a thud on her vehicle.
"We later found out that he threw a can of soda at my car and hit the back passenger side," Delaine said. "I didn't know if there was any damage or if he had tapped me or something."
Delaine stopped her vehicle, got out and put her hand up in the air to motion to the driver to stop his vehicle so she could get his information.
"All I remember is him looking me dead in the eyes and next thing I know, I was being run over," she said. "My head hit the concrete."
The driver sped off, leaving Delaine lying on the road, she said.
Delaine now has a broken wrist, torn tendons in her foot and abrasions and bruises all over her body.
"I have constant pain through my wrist," she said. "Every time I close my eyes now, [I see] his face and driving through me."
Delaine said she is indebted to a stranger who saw what happened and sprang into action to help.
"You're honestly my hero," Delaine said. "He was on the ground making sure I'm awake.
"My friends in the car, they literally thought I was dead because I wasn't moving on the road because I was just so in shock."
Police visited her in hospital Tuesday night to inform her they had arrested and charged the man.
