'A hobby that crosses generations': Model railroad show pulls into Slemon Park
Trains on P.E.I. have long left the station, but that doesn't stop some train enthusiasts from building their own railroads — model railroads, that is.
Some of those railroads will be on display Saturday at a show hosted by the Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders at the Atlantic Police Academy in Slemon Park.
'Nice diversion'
Ed Cook says model railway building is "one of those hobbies that crosses generations."
"It's a good way for parents and kids to do something together," he said on CBC's Mainstreet P.E.I.
"It's not meant to be fast, it's something you can do and take your mind off of other things that may cause you stress. It's a nice diversion."
Cook said even though there are no trains on P.E.I. anymore, the Island has a deep railroad history. Railroad "ambassadors" will be at the show to answer questions about trains — both real and model — and model railway building.
Confederation Trail
"Everybody knows the Confederation Trail but as we get older a lot of the younger generation has no idea what a train is on P.E.I.," Cook said.
The show will also feature remote control tanks and airplanes outside.
Admission is $5, but children under 10 will get in for free.
