Diamondbacks first base coach Dave McKay recovering after dugout fall
Longtime Arizona Diamondbacks first base coach Dave McKay is expected to rejoin the team for the start of the season after he suffered a brutal fall in the dugout earlier this week, according to The Arizona Republic.
McKay, 71, slipped in the dugout at Scottsdale Stadium this week and suffered both a lacerated spleen and a broken rib. He slipped on a dugout step, manager Torey Lovullo said, and fell into the bench.
“He bounced up so quickly that nobody really saw it,” Lovullo said, via The Arizona Republic. “He made us think he was OK. He came to work the next day. It was that following morning that he wasn’t feeling so good.”
McKay underwent a procedure on his spleen, and is now resting at home. He will likely be away from the team for at least another week.
McKay played in the league himself from 1975-82, and is preparing to enter his eighth season with the Diamondbacks. He has spent 38 seasons coaching around the majors.
“He’ll be ready for the season,” Lovullo said, via The Arizona Republic. “In true Dave McKay form, when he was calling to tell me he wasn’t feeling so well, he said, ‘I probably won’t make the game tonight. I’ll be ready tomorrow.’”
