Arrest made in fatal hit and run

Police have charged the man they believe was driving the Hummer that struck this minivan on Highway 401 on New Year's Day.

A 30-year-old Toronto man has been charged in connection with a hit and run on New Year's Day that killed a seven-year-old boy.

Jose Olmedo Renteria has been charged with dangerous driving, criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Police believe Renteria was driving a Hummer that struck the back of a Honda Odyssey minivan on Highway 401 on Jan. 1. Jacoub Favila of Ajax was killed in the accident.

"The Hummer did not stop and continued on to Dixie Road, where the vehicle had been abandoned," said the OPP in a news release.

Renteria allegedly fled the scene after ditching the Hummer.

Police say Renteria was arrested "without incident on Highway 401 eastbound near the Town of Cobourg" on Friday evening.

Jacoub was one of six children and two adults riding in a van travelling west on Highway 401 near Dixie at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when it was hit from behind by the silver Hummer.

The boy was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. The other occupants of the van were not seriously injured.

Among the children in the van was Jacoub's twin brother.
