Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said Tuesday morning that Jett Duffey, Christian Taylor, Quan Shorts and Desmon Smith have all been suspended indefinitely.
Four Texas Tech football players were arrested and charged with misdemeanors after an incident at a Lubbock nightclub early Sunday morning.
Quarterback Jett Duffey and linebacker Christian Taylor were charged with criminal mischief. Wide receiver Quan Shorts and defensive back Desmon Smith were charged with disorderly conduct.
Here’s what led to their arrests via the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Ten people total were arrested.
Officers were dispatched to Bash Riprocks nightclub, 2419 Main St., at 1:54 a.m., after reports of a disturbance and a possible armed person, according to a news release from Kasie Whitley, Lubbock Police Department spokeswoman.
When officers arrived on scene to look for the possible armed suspect, a group of people in front of the nightclub were impeding traffic.
“After attempting to locate (the) armed suspect, an officer observed an individual intentionally cause damage to a vehicle by smashing the windshield,” Whitley stated in the release. “When officers tried to arrest the suspect, the crowd became aggressive toward the responding officers.”
Taylor’s arrest is in association with the alleged damaged windshield while Duffey’s is for damage to other property. According to police, Smith was bitten by a police dog.
Texas Tech said it was aware of the incident. The team practiced in Midland, Texas, earlier on Saturday.
Duffey is set to compete with McLane Carter to be Tech’s starting quarterback in 2018. He was previously suspended in 2017 after he was found guilty by the student conduct board of having non-consensual sex with a female student at the school. No criminal charges were filed regarding the allegations.
Smith had 32 tackles in 2017 while Taylor had five. Shorts had nine catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
