Arson damages Saint-Léonard gym

A Saint-Léonard gym was the target of an arson attack early Thursday morning.

Montreal police said emergency crews were called to the scene after an alarm went off in the Jarry Street building, located near Pascal-Gagnon Street, just after midnight.

Const. Daniel Lacoursière said when police arrived on scene, they found one of the windows of the ground-floor business broken and a fire burning inside.

Firefighters quickly put the fire out.

"After examining the scene, police officers were able to determine that accelerant was put in the fitness centre to start the fire," said Lacoursière.

Investigators are expected to be on scene later today to investigate further.

Damage to the gym was significant, but adjacent businesses in the commercial plaza weren't affected.

Police say they do not have any suspects.

In October, a gym in Villeray was also the target of a criminal fire after someone smashed a window and tossed in a Molotov cocktail.

The damage was minor in that incident.
