Army and BYU need opponents to play anything close to a full schedule in 2020. So why not play each other?
Both Army and BYU have been significantly impacted by postponements across the college football world because of the coronavirus pandemic. The game against Army is BYU’s fifth scheduled game of the season. Before adding the Black Knights, BYU had lost eight games off its schedule thanks to the postponements of the Big Ten, MAC, Mountain West and Pac-12 and the move to conference-only schedules by other schools.
Army now has six games on its 2020 schedule. The Black Knights lost games against Oklahoma, Eastern Michigan, UMass, UConn and others.
BYU opens the season on Sept. 7 at Navy.
Who else can they play?
With most teams set to play 10 games in 2020 assuming the season happens, BYU still needs to find five games to get to 10. And where are those games going to come from? The Cougars are the westernmost team left in college football this fall; no other team west of Texas is set to play at college’s top level in 2020.
That could present some travel challenges. Three of BYU’s five scheduled games are at home. Will anyone want to go west? And who has a spot on their schedule anyway? BYU may need to resort to finding teams from the American, Sun Belt and Conference USA to fill out its schedule. Teams in the ACC and Big 12 — the two Power Five conferences allowing their teams to play a non-conference game — are booked up.
“Yeah, I have a lot of trust in our administration and in Tom Holmoe the athletic director here,” wide receiver Gunner Romney told the Deseret News on Monday. “He has been working day in and day out to get us a full schedule. And so we are pretty optimistic about where we are at in regards to the season. We are really hoping for a full season and I think we will get it.”
Army is apparently looking at FCS opponents to fill out its schedule. Per the Times Herald-Record, the school is “hoping” to have seven home games in 2020 with at least two of those games against FCS opponents. Army previously added a game against Georgia Southern in November to its schedule as schools were postponing games.
