Suspect killed in police shooting near Entwistle, west of Edmonton

Update: A news release from Alberta Serious Incident Response Team Wednesday said the 32-year-old man shot by RCMP Sunday was wanted in a domestic aggravated assault. Police called the man on his phone during the pursuit to de-escalate the situation, but he refused to surrender and made threats regarding the use of a .22-calibre rifle, ASIRT said. During the ensuing confrontation, three officers fired at and struck the suspect.

A man shot by police Sunday night died at the scene, Alberta RCMP said in a news release Monday.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting, which happened about 95 kilometres west of Edmonton near the hamlet of Entwistle.

RCMP said in the release they were warned at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday to be on the lookout for a suspect from Onion Lake, Sask., who was wanted in an aggravated assault and believed to armed.

Later that night, RCMP learned from the suspect's cellphone data he may be west of Edmonton. At 8:30 p.m., police located the suspect's vehicle heading west on Highway 16 and, after the driver failed to pull over, began a pursuit.

The vehicle was stopped using a spike belt on the highway near Range Road 73 when a confrontation led officers to open fire, RCMP said. The man died at the scene.

No officers were hurt, RCMP said.

The westbound lanes of Highway 16 were closed until early Monday.

More details will be released as the investigation progresses, ASIRT officials said.

ASIRT investigates incidents involving Alberta's police that result in serious injury or death, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
