ASIRT investigating Friday police shooting in Calgary that sent man to hospital
Alberta's police oversight body is investigating a police shooting in Calgary Friday night that sent a man to hospital with serious injuries.
Around 10 p.m., Calgary police were called to the 1500 block of 35th Street S.E., in the Radisson Heights area, for reports of a suicidal man carrying weapons and acting erratically, Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said in a release Monday.
"Verbal efforts to disarm the male proved unsuccessful, and the male advanced towards one officer. The officer discharged his service weapon several times, striking the male and causing him to collapse," ASIRT said.
Two edged weapons were recovered from the scene.
The man received medical care at the scene, but paramedics sent him to hospital in critical but stable condition.
No officers were injured during the incident.
ASIRT is asking for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact investigators at 403-592-4306.
Per Alberta's Police Act, ASIRT investigates events where serious injury or death may have been caused by police, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct, such as sexual assault and obstruction of justice.
