Assiniboine Links adds new security measures after seniors' theft complaints

A Winnipeg assisted-living facility has changed its tune and says it is taking security concerns more seriously after a care-worker allegedly stole valuables from a senior's suite.

Among other new measures, Assiniboine Links in Charleswood said it has replaced room keys and is considering installing hallway cameras to ensure seniors feel more safe.

The facility initially said it did not plan to discipline an employee alleged to have taken money from Beverly Eriksrud, 85. They claimed the theft allegation was unfounded.

The female care-worker was recently arrested and charged, however, after Eriksrud turned hidden security footage over to police. The footage shows an employee pocketing something in Eriksrud's room and then leaving.

In light of recent developments, Assiniboine Links terminated the worker's employment and has implemented a series of safety measures it hopes will make seniors feel more protected.

Al Nixon, a chairman of the Assiniboine Links board of directors, said they have taken steps to ensure seniors' possessions are more secure:

Assiniboine Links Statement

It is unfortunate that these incidents happened and hopefully the measures being implemented by Assiniboine Links Assisted Living Facility will prevent future incidents.

In consultation with Winnipeg Police Services, they felt we were moving in the right direction with the following measures:

- We have had all the suites re-keyed, which was implemented on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015.

- We are pursuing quotes for the installation of a video surveillance system in the hallways.

As for policy changes:

- Incident reports, once completed, to be reviewed by the resident/family to ensure it reflects the accuracy of the incident as reported and signed off by the resident/family.

- The requirement of a police record check, senior abuse and child abuse registry check as part of the condition of employment.

Seniors who believe they are being taken advantage of in anyway can call the province's Senior's Abuse Support Line at 1-888-896-7183.
