Athletic director at South MS school district arrested on child porn charges, sheriff says

A director of athletics for the George County School District was arrested Thursday on child porn charges, authorities said.

Chris West, 51, of Lucedale faces one count of possession of child pornography and one count of distribution of child pornography, the George County Sheriff’s Office and the George County School District said in a news release.

Authorities executed a search warrant at West’s home and arrested him on Thursday, the news release said.

“The George County School District has just been made aware of the allegations against Chris West and is fully cooperating with law enforcement in this matter,” Superintendent Wade Whitney said in the news release. “The safety and well-being of our students is always our paramount concern. As with any personnel matter, we cannot comment on the specifics of the situation at this time.”

Authorities said West is held in the George County jail on a $100,000 bond.

West was honored with the Mississippi Association of Coaches Distinguished Coach Award in 2008, according to a biography page on the George County School District’s website. The website said he worked in various school district roles since 1999, including as a teacher and coach at George County High School, a principal at Leakesville Junior High School and a director of transportation.

The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office is directing the investigation. George County assisted with the search warrant, the Attorney General’s Office said.

“We remain committed to supporting the ongoing investigation and ensuring justice is served,” Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said in a news release.

Attorney General Lynn Fitch is asking anyone with information about the case to call Mississippi Attorney General Cyber Crime Investigators at 601-359-3680.
