Hurricane Nigel and two other Atlantic systems are being tracked. Here’s the forecast

UPDATE: Disturbances — one near Florida — and Hurricane Nigel are tracked. Check the forecast

While forecasters watch for the strengthening of Hurricane Nigel in the Atlantic Ocean and a system off Africa’s west coast, a disturbance near Florida is expected to impact portions of the state.

How will the disturbance affect the Sunshine State?

Here’s what the National Hurricane Center said Monday in its latest advisories.

System could develop off Florida’s east coast

A non-tropical area of low pressure could form near the southeast coast of the United States late this week, the hurricane center said in its 2 p.m. advisory. The hurricane center first began monitoring this system Sunday night.

“This system could acquire some subtropical characteristics this weekend if it remains offshore while it moves generally northward,” the hurricane center said.

Beginning Thursday, this disturbance could cause hazardous marine conditions, rough surf, rip currents, beach erosion, gusty winds and heavy rain to portions of east central Florida, particularly along the coast near and north of Cape Canaveral, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

Formation chance through 48 hours: near zero.

Formation chance through 7 days: 30%.

How strong will Hurricane Nigel get and where is it going?

Nigel became a hurricane early Monday and had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph as of 5 p.m. advisory of the hurricane center. The hurricane was about 810 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, moving northwest at 12 mph.

“This general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days,” the hurricane center said. “Nigel is then forecast to turn northward late Tuesday, and then accelerate northeastward through the rest of the week.”

The hurricane center expects Nigel to rapidly strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane on Tuesday followed by a gradual weakening trend starting Wednesday.
