Attempted break-ins reported on social media don't match stats: RCMP

RCMP react to Judge John Joy's concern about shackled prisoners

Police say reports of attempted break-ins are not on the rise in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, despite what some Facebook users believe.

Some people have been posting and sharing stories and images on social media showing their cars, sheds, and other property under attack by would-be burglars.

RCMP Cpl. Rick Mills says that the number of reported break-ins is actually down to eight this summer, from 12 this time last year.

But some instances might be going unreported.

"There could be actually more than that occurring in the community."

"People for some reason don't come forward to the police and report things and they'll talk about it on other channels and other networks," said Mills.

If the police are notified of a potential crime, Mills said, they have a better chance of catching the perpetrator.

The RCMP are reminding people in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to lock all their doors and windows, and to report any suspect behaviour to the police.
