Attendance numbers continue to rise for Calgary Stampede
The second day of the Stampede was another good one where 135,252 people walked through the gates on Saturday. That's just over 17,000 people than on the same day during last year's Stampede.
It follows a record breaking day set on Friday where a total of 108,455 people attended which is 25,000 more than on the first day last year and more than 1,000 than the previous record set during the 2000 Stampede.
As of Saturday, 282,735 people have attended the Stampede this year.
The Calgary Chamber of Commerce's chief economist, Ben Brunnen, said this year could also be a record year for the amount of money coming into the city.
“The reality is, it’s going to depend on how many visitors come to the city and how much is being spent,” he said. “This year we think that, I’m of the mind, we’ll see better economic activity compared to previous years."
Brunnen estimates the city will pull in close to $170 million, much of that goes to hotels, catering businesses, the retail sector, and restaurants.
