ATV tracks in snow lead police to man under Canada-wide driving prohibition

Woman, 45, killed in ATV rollover at Montreal Lake Cree Nation, Sask.

A man banned from driving and owing more than $13,000 in fines was caught, after police following a set of all-terrain vehicle tracks to an abandoned machine in Corner Brook.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers noticed tire tracks for a three-wheel ATV in the Curling Street area, at around 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 15.

The tracks suggested the ATV had been driven in an erratic matter.

Officers following the tracks in the snow and found the ATV abandoned at the intersection of Birchy Cove Drive and Woodcrest Avenue. It was seized by police.

The alleged driver was identified through the investigation and arrested.

He was under a Canada-wide prohibition from driving any motorized vehicle, and was also found owing $13,000 in outstanding traffic fines.

The 24-year-old was arrested on Tuesday and is facing a slew of charges under the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act and the Motorized Snow Vehicle/All-Terrain Vehicles Act.

Those charges include public mischief; driving without a licence, insurance or licence plates; operating an ATV without a helmet and without adequate brakes.
