OTTAWA — Canadians have chosen another minority Liberal government — almost identical to the one it replaced — to finish the fight against COVID-19 and rebuild the shattered economy. Precisely how stable a minority remains to be seen, as results were still trickling in and there were tight contests in dozens of ridings as the clock ran out on Monday night. There are also almost 800,000 mail-in ballots to be counted, starting Tuesday, which could yet change the preliminary results in many of thos
The Nova Scotia government says it made $104 million from its investment in Meta Materials Inc., a Dartmouth startup company that makes high-performance materials used in the defence and aerospace industries. The province's venture capital Crown corporation Innovacorp was an early investor, putting $3 million into the nanotechnology company. In July, Innovacorp sold its shares shortly after Meta Materials was listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. The sale produced a 35-fold return on investment.
Windsor resident Yvonne Pilon's recent trip back to Detroit cost 100 times more than it normally would. Pilon travelled by air earlier this month to visit family and friends in Michigan for the first time since the pandemic began. And if she wants to visit them again, it looks like her pocketbook will take yet another hit. On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced that the border would remain closed to non-essential visitors at land crossings such as the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor-Detroit
BERLIN (AP) — Angela Merkel, Germany's first female chancellor, has been praised by many for her pragmatic leadership in a turbulent world and celebrated by some as a feminist icon. But a look at her track record over her 16 years at Germany's helm reveals missed opportunities for fighting gender inequality at home. Named “The World’s Most Powerful Woman” by Forbes magazine for the last 10 years in a row, Merkel has been cast as a powerful defender of liberal values in the West. She has easily s

The SickKids Foundation says the gift from Toronto entrepreneur Garry Hurvitz will support the hospital's centres for brain and mental health and community mental health. The not-for-profit says the funds will also support SickKids' research, care and education to improve outcomes for children and youth affected by
The 2021 federal election may be almost wrapped up (pending the counting of mailed-in ballots) but the analysis is far from over. Liberals will, once again, be the party representing P.E.I. in Ottawa, but there are some curious results for those in second, third and fourth place across the province's ridings. All these results will be promising for some, and disappointing for others. And it all starts with... Another Liberal sweep With Prince Edward Island's voting history, this should come as n
BANGKOK (AP) — Health officials in the Thai capital made headway Tuesday in their effort to vaccinate children against the coronavirus, giving shots of the Pfizer vaccine to students aged 12 to 18 with underlying diseases. Vaccinations for that age bracket were first offered last month through hospitals, but now are arranged by schools. A separate campaign by a medical research institute on Monday began inoculating children aged 10 to 18 with China’s Sinopharm vaccine. On Tuesday, 1,500 students
A body found in a U.S. national park in Wyoming was identified as Gabby Petito, the 22-year-old "van life" traveler who went missing during a road trip with her fiance, the FBI said on Tuesday, adding a local coroner had ruled her death a homicide. The confirmation is the latest turn in a story that has gripped Americans since Petito's family reported her missing on Sept. 11. Ten days earlier the fiance, Brian Laundrie, returned home from the cross-country trip without her.
In Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole concession speech after the 2021 election turned in the Liberals favour for a minority government, he focused on Canada's "division" while teasing that he intends to stay on as leader of the party.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A plaque and a palm tree weren't enough to mark the swagger and star power of Burt Reynolds. That's why a bronze bust, mustachioed of course, and sporting his “Smokey and the Bandit” cowboy hat, were unveiled on Monday, three years after his death. “Anybody else want to touch him?” Loni Anderson, Reynolds' wife from 1988 to 1994, asked the small crowd that gathered around the sculpture after the unveiling at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. “Yes, he's made to be touc
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is looking ahead to brighter days and to getting Canada through the pandemic. The Liberals managed to secure the most seats in the 2021 federal election — but fell short of their coveted majority.
The NDP is poised to make an incremental gain in seats but will remain the fourth-place party under the projected Liberal minority government. New Democrats are currently now elected or leading in 25 ridings. A total of 25 seats would only barely surpass the 24 seats the NDP won in the 2019 election. The party did slightly increase its share of the popular vote at 17.7 per cent so far, an improvement of 1.7 per cent over its 2019 result. "I want you to know our fight for you will continue," Sing
A pair of Plate Cove West inn owners are hoping to bring Syrian refugees to Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula with the help of some creative fundraising. Karen and her husband, Chris, are the owners of Round Da Bay Inn, and have hosted a number of events, including Eid celebrations, for Syrian friends in Gander. One day, they received an email from a Syrian refugee who said she found the events through Facebook, and asked if the Ricketts would be able to help her find a sponsor. After confirmin
A community farm in Halifax is looking for help after an alleged impaired driver smashed through its storage shed early last Friday. Members said it's lucky the incident didn't happen later in the day, when the garden gets busy. "It could have been catastrophic. It would have been horrible," said Sara Burgess, co-ordinator of Common Roots BiHi Park site on Bayers Road. The driver careened from an on-ramp to Highway 102, sped across roughly 30 metres of grass, "missed our water tank which has 10,
LONDON (Reuters) -The European Court of Human Rights found on Tuesday that Russia was responsible for the assassination of ex-KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko, who died an agonising death in 2006 after being poisoned in London with a rare radioactive substance. Litvinenko, a defector who had become a vocal critic of the Kremlin, died three weeks after drinking green tea laced with polonium-210 at a plush London hotel. Britain has long blamed the attack on Moscow, and the European court in Strasbourg, France, agreed on Tuesday, saying in a statement that "Mr Litvinenko’s assassination was imputable to Russia", prompting a swift rebuke from the Kremlin.
Pounded by drought and cattle feed shortages, the last few months have been gruelling for many Prairie ranchers. Now, as fall approaches and people take stock, tough decisions loom as ranchers assess how much cattle they will keep through winter amid escalating costs. "I know that we're probably looking at liquidating about a third of our herd just because we can't find enough feed for the winter," said Melanie Wowk, who has about 300 cattle on a ranch in northeastern Alberta. She said feed cost
Bloc Québecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet is projected by CBC News to retain his seat in Beloeil–Chambly, though his party may fall just short of its seat total from the 2019 election. The Bloc is currently leading or projected to win in 31 ridings in Quebec, down one from the seats it held when Parliament was dissolved in August. The party is projected to remain in third place in Parliament as the NDP is on track to finish fourth with 27 seats, In an early morning speech at his campaign head
It's still not clear if the NDP will be able to pull off a breakthrough win in Toronto this election. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, vote counting continued for Parkdale-High Park, Spadina-Fort York and Davenport in the city's downtown west end, with the Liberals and NDP showing close numbers. Davenport was particularly tight, with NDP candidate Alejandra Bravo and Liberal incumbent Julie Dzerowicz trading off leading their riding through the night. According to Denise Hammond, campaign
LOS LLANOS DE ARIDANE, Spain (Reuters) -Families rushed to retrieve belongings from their homes and escape the advancing lava on Tuesday, as sirens sounded and helicopters flew overhead in air filled with smoke from an erupting volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma. The largest flow was advancing towards a banana plantation and water reservoir as it crept closer to the main street of the town of La Laguna, travelling at about 200 metres an hour, authorities said. Lorena, a 42-year-old Laguna resident, raced to salvage furniture and electrical appliances from her parents' home.
One of the first things Edward Wilson did when he got home after being hospitalized for six months with COVID-19 was ask his wife if she knew him. Wilson, 80, contracted the novel coronavirus in March. He spent time in three intensive care units, was intubated twice and given a tracheotomy. His condition was so grave that his relatives were told twice to make arrangements for his death and gathered around on an iPad to say goodbye. "It was such a rollercoaster ride because he'd get better, then
