The death of an infant on the Stoney Nakoda Nation, 75 kilometres west of Calgary, has been deemed a homicide, say RCMP.

On Wednesday, Stoney Nakoda RCMP were called to do a welfare check for a six-month-old at a residence on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation around 6:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, the infant was found deceased, RCMP said.

According to a release issued Friday, the chief medical examiner in Calgary determined the death to be a homicide.

The Alberta RCMP major crimes unit will now lead the investigation.
