Residents rally to support Badger family displaced by fire

A volunteer fire chief in central Newfoundland says about 35 members of the community stepped up to help a family on Saturday when a fire gutted their home.

A Badger woman and her two adult children have been staying with family, while Canadian Red Cross disaster volunteers have been assisting with emergency purchases, such as food and clothing.

The woman's husband is working out of the country.

The Badger Volunteer Fire Department received the call around 3 p.m.

Clarence Young said when crews arrived, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the roof of the house.

A young woman was inside the home when the fire broke out, but some of her friends saw the smoke and alerted her to the danger, and got her to safety.

Young said neighbours assisted at the scene, and also brought food and water to the fire hall for fire crews and the displaced family.

"There was a couple of honorary members that came by and offered their assistance, and they helped us right on through the scene. We also had the Grand Falls-Windsor Fire Department respond," said Young.

"Small town Badger turns out well when adversity arises — we seem to get our share."

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown.

Young said an excavator was needed to extinguish flames in the basement.
