Bafta TV Awards: Chernobyl leads the way with 14 nominations
The 2020 Bafta TV nominations have been announced, with Chernobyl and The Crown up for the most awards.
Chernobyl, the Sky miniseries about the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster, earned 14 nominations, including for best mini-series and leading actor.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s third season of The Crown has been nominated in seven categories, including best drama series.
Other shows up for the best drama award are The End of the F***ing World, Gentleman Jack and Giri/Haji.
In previous years, the lack of diversity at the Bafta film and TV awards has been a huge talking point, with #BaftasSoWhite trending on Twitter and director Steve McQueen saying they risked becoming “irrelevant” if they continued to snub BAME talent.
This year, however, the TV nominations have been much more diverse, with BAME screen stars represented in every category apart from lead actress. It is the most diverse list in Bafta TV's 65-year history.
The best lead actor category sees nominations for Jared Harris (Chernobyl), Stephen Graham (The Virtues), Takehiro Hira (Giri/Haji) and Callum Turner (The Capture).
Glenda Jackson (Elizabeth is Missing), Samantha Morton (I Am Kirsty), Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) are competing to win best lead actress.
The awards have been pushed back from their original date of 17 May to 31 July due to the coronavirus pandemic, with a virtual ceremony set to be hosted by Richard Ayoade.
