Bag Containing City Plans for Paris Olympics Reportedly Stolen in Train Theft

A bag containing information about the upcoming Paris Olympics has been misplaced or potentially stolen, according to multiple reports.
On Monday evening, a Paris City Hall engineer reportedly told police his bag had been stolen after he placed it in a compartment above his seat on a train departing from the Gare du Nord station in Paris, according to ESPN and local outlet BFMTV.
According to the French outlet, the 56-year-old unnamed engineer told police the bag contained his professional computer and two USB drives with "sensitive" data, potentially including a security plan for the upcoming Olympics, beginning on July 26.
Transport police began an investigation into the incident on Monday, according to ESPN.

In a statement to ESPN, the office said, "Although he was careful to point out that his bag contained a professional USB memory stick ... it is important to specify that this stick only contained notes relating to traffic in Paris during the Olympic Games, and not on sensitive security plans."
Representatives for Paris 2024 did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

On Wednesday, Paris City Hall issued a statement regarding the missing bag. "Initial checks revealed that the agent was not in possession of any information relating to the organisation and deployment of the police force during the Olympic and Paralympic Games."
City Hall said the bag "contained notes for internal use, relating to his work in the IT department of the Highways and Transport Directorate," in the statement on Wednesday.
"All the necessary resets were carried out in order to cut off all access to the City's IT system," the statement from City Hall concluded.

According to TIME, Paris transport police are using CCTV footage to investigate the crime, and the mayor has requested additional investigation into the breach of internal security procedures by the Paris general.
When the Games kick off on July 26, an estimated 30,000 members of the police force are expected to work each day of the games, which conclude on Aug. 11.
