Bake Off's Noel Fielding reminds co-host Alison Hammond it's a family show after Spotted Dick gag
The Great British Bake Off tent descended into sniggers and innuendo when they were tasked with baking classic school dinner pudding Spotted D*ck.
What did you miss?
The Great British Bake Off's Noel Fielding had to remind co-host Alison Hammond it is a family show after the technical challenge sent her into pun overdrive.
The seventh week of Bake Off 2024 was Dessert Week and for the technical the bakers were challenged to make classic school dinner pudding Spotted Dick. Hammond told the contestants: "You have two hours and fifteen minutes to get you dick ready."
The challenge then produced an onslaught of giggles and innuendo from the bakers.
What, how, and why?
Dessert Week aired on Tuesday 5 November on Channel 4. After revealing the technical challenge Hammond told the contestants: "You have two hours and fifteen minutes to get your dick ready." Fielding reminded Hammond and the sniggering bakers: "Come on now kids, it's a family show."
Judge Paul Hollywood asked Prue Leith why she had chosen the steamed pudding for the challenge. She said: "When I think of Spotted Dick I think of school dinners. And back then we all thought dick was hilarious. I think done well, it's delicious."
Discussing her steamed pudding technique for her Spotter Dick with paediatric nurse Georgie Fielding asked: "You like it when it's small and dry?" Georgie replied: "I like it shrivelled up."
Fielding said: "You don’t like it when it's swollen?"
At the end of the technical dentistry student Sumayah was in tears after realising she had messed up her pudding and forgotten to put the sugar in. Contestant Gill told her: "Can I just say never, ever cry over dick. Ever."
And after coming last, Sumayah reasoned: "No one is ever going to say, 'You know what I could really do with with Spotted Dick.' No one is going to say that."

What did viewers say?
Bake Off fans loved the return of innuendo and cheeky fun on the show. One wrote on social media platform X: "Alison and Noel are unhinged with these innuendos #GBBO." Another said: "The innuendos of innuendos from Alison." And another exclaimed: "Oh my Alison! What a sentence! Got a girl blushing! #GBBO."
But viewers were also missing fan-favourite contestant Nelly, who was sent home in Autumn Week. One wrote on social media platform X: "Watching bake off without Nelly. I don’t think I can do this…..#GBBO." Another tweeted: "Seriously missing #Nelly in #GBBO tonight" And another lamented: "Something missing from tonight's show that should still be there! Nelly deserved to go further! Other bakers had bad bakes in that episode should have gone!!! Very unfair!!!!! Losing a real stand out star to soon #GBBO (still) disappointed with decision last week!"
Dentistry student Sumayah, this year's youngest contestant at 19, was sent home. The judges were unimpressed with her lemon coffee tiramisu, which Hollywood said was too bitter and Leith said didn't work. Sumayah said tearfully: "I'm disappointed in lots of ways. I see their criticism and I get it. And I'm bitter!"
She said on leaving the tent: "I feel like it wasn't one specific event not letting me down, it was just kind of like a series of mistakes here and there. So thank you. I've learned to be more confident in myself and my ideas. You learn a lot from everyone, and I feel like I'm gonna take a piece of everyone away with me."
For the signature challenge in Dessert Week the bakers made filled meringue nests. Midwife Illiyin was worried that after her meringues cracked. But both the judges loved her pina colada flavour with a pineapple curd and coconut flavoured meringue. Hollywood had a second bite he loved the taste so much and Leith said: "I wish I'd thought of it." Retail temp Dylan got a Hollywood handshake for his chocolate painted coconut shell 'illusion' meringues which Hollywood said were very clever. Dylan was shocked asking "Really?!"
And for the showstopper in Dessert Week the six remaining bakers made Italian coffee classic tiramisu, including baking their own ladies fingers from scratch.
Dylan won Star Baker after winning the technical and getting handshake for his meringue nests. He goes through to the quarter final, along with nurse Georgie, midwife Illiyian, category manager Gill and menswear designer Christian.
The Great British Bake Off airs Channel 4 at 8pm on Tuesday.
