Bangladeshi chef and wife open NJ's Kitchen in St. John's
Bangladesh chef Jamil Hossain has worked in kitchens all over the world and that's reflected in the new restaurant he opened this week in St. John's.
"I have an open heart, I love feeding people. I enjoy when somebody is eating and enjoying my cooking," Hossain told CBC Radio's The St. John's Morning Show.
"That's a big deal for me."
Expertise in international cuisine
NJ's Kitchen, which opened Friday in Churchill Square, will serve different types of international fare on rotation — one day it might be Mexican, another day it might be Indian, Hossain said. He and his wife, Shahina Nipa, were at the eatery with their new baby.
Hossain said he has been a chef in many parts of the world, including England and the United States.
It's led to his expertise in international cuisine, in particular his ability to make authentic Thai food after living in Thailand.
Still learning
Indian staples, such as butter chicken and curries, he leaves to Nipa.
"She won't let me touch it," he said. "I'm learning still from her."
Hossain said he isn't looking to be a millionaire, he just wants to pay his bills.
"My goal is to be happy," he said.
Happy with opening day business
According to a Facebook post by the restaurant, customers kept them busy on their opening day.
"From 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. non stop without any break we served over 300 guests joyfully," the post read.
"Since we are new in business and still learning, we apologise if there is any lacking. We will improve for sure by your motivation."
