Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

March 27 (The Sports Exchange) - David Rollins was making a strong bid this spring to win a bullpen spot with the Seattle Mariners, but the left-hander will be sitting out the first 80 games of the season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. Major League Baseball announced the suspension on Friday that takes effect at the beginning of the season. Rollins violated the league's drug policy with a positive test for Stanozolol. Rollins, a Rule 5 pick by the Mariners from the Houston Astros during the winter, had been a surprise this spring, allowing one earned run and striking out seven batters in eight innings. --- Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander left Friday's spring training game as a precaution with a cramp in his right triceps muscle. The team said Verlander, a six-time All-Star and 2011 MVP and Cy Young winner, will be re-evaluated Saturday but didn't expect him to miss his next scheduled spring start. This spring, the 32-year-old has a 6.08 ERA in four starts. Last season, Verlander finished 15-12 with a 4.54 ERA and 159 strikeouts. --- New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi named right-hander Masahiro Tanaka as the Opening Day starter. Girardi said Friday that Tanaka will be followed in the rotation by right-hander Michael Pineda, Sabathia and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. The Yankees open their season on April 6 at Yankee Stadium against the Toronto Blue Jays. --- Right-hander Julio Teheran was named to start the Atlanta Braves' opener next month against the Marlins in Miami. Last year, Teheran signed a six-year, $32.4 million deal and logged a 14-13 record with a 2.89 ERA in 33 starts. --- The Chicago White Sox claimed right-hander Kyle Drabek off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and placed right-hander Nate Jones on the 60-day disabled list. Drabek pitched three scoreless innings in two games for the Blue Jays last year. The former first-round draft pick spent the bulk of the 2014 season at Triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old Drabek, who is the son of former major-leaguer Doug Drabek, pitched in portions of five seasons with the Blue Jays and had an 8-15 record with a 5.27 ERA. --- Promising right-hander Danny Salazar was thought to be in the running for an opening in the Cleveland Indians' rotation but was instead sent to Triple-A Columbus. Salazar is 1-2 with an 8.18 ERA in 11 innings this spring. In his latest outing on Thursday against the Cincinnati Reds, he gave up six runs, including two homers, and six hits in 3 1/3 innings. The demotion leaves the Indians with left-hander T.J. House, Zach McAllister and Josh Tomlin to contend for the rotation spots. In 2014, Salazar spent the season going between Cleveland and Columbus, posting a 6-8 record with a 4.25 ERA in 20 starts for the Indians. He also started their wild-card playoff game against the Tampa Bay Rays. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
