Beaconsfield reaches deal with province for Highway 20 sound barrier

Beaconsfield is one step closer to having a sound barrier built between homes and Highway 20.

Residents have long complained about traffic noise from the autoroute, but the city has said it would be too costly to build a wall.

Now Mayor Georges Bourelle says he's reached a deal with Quebec to reduce the cost for the city from $10 million to $5 million.

Bourelle said the new agreement came during a meeting Thursday with Transport Minister Robert Poëti.

"This is the first time in 30 years that we have had an opportunity to meet with the Minister of Transport on this issue, and the results are encouraging and promising," he said.

Quebec would cover most of the expected $20-million price tag.

Bourelle says the city will consult residents before moving ahead with the project.
