A Beaufort Delta Education Council staff member has been charged with multiple sexual offences for incidents that happened in Inuvik and Ulukhaktok between 2018 and 2020, N.W.T. RCMP say.

Richard Steven McKinnon, 44, is the former principal of Helen Kalvak Elihakvik School in Ulukhaktok.

As of Wednesday afternoon, McKinnon was listed as the assistant superintendent of the Beaufort Delta Education Council on its website.

According to RCMP, he was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of sexual assault, sexual interference, two counts of sexual exploitation, invitation to sexual touching, making sexually explicit material available to a child, assault and breach of trust.

"Investigators feel that due to the nature of McKinnon's position in these communities, there may be additional victims," RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

"Anyone who feels they could be a victim, or has concerns about someone else who could be a victim, is encouraged to contact your local RCMP detachment or police of jurisdiction or Crime Stoppers."

McKinnon was released and is scheduled to appear in court in Inuvik on Sept. 24.
