"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," Gibb's rep said in a statement released to Access on Sunday. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

In April, the singer seemingly beat all odds, waking up from a coma after a fight with pneumonia left him gravely sick.

Prior to falling ill with pneumonia, the singer had undergone intestinal surgery in March and was forced to bow out of the London premiere of his first classical work, "Titanic Requiem," due to illness.

Gibb's twin brother, Maurice, passed away in 2003 at the age of 53 after suffering complications from a twisted intestine.
