Toronto breaks temperature record at 16.5 C

Google plans to 'fix' Toronto by building smart city

With just a few weeks until spring, it would seem that Mother Nature is getting a jump on the next season, as Toronto hit a record high temperature on Thursday.

As of noon, the temperature had reached 16.5 C, according to Environment Canada. That handily beat the previous record for Feb. 23 of 14.9 C, which was set in 1984.

The normal high for Feb. 23 is 1 C.

But that's not the only record that was broken Thursday. Today is the warmest February day ever recorded in Toronto, according to CBC Toronto meteorologist Jay Scotland.

The temperature will drop to a low of 2 C overnight, with the risk of a thunderstorm before morning.

Friday's high will reach 4 C before another spike on Saturday, with a forecast high of 12 C.

The warm weather follows an unseasonably balmy Family Day weekend, when another temperature record fell. On Saturday, the high of 11.6 C beat the previous high for Feb. 18 of 10.8 C.
