Quebec's police watchdog has launched an investigation after a routine traffic stop ended in a violent collision Monday near Saint-Basile.

In its preliminary report, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) says the intervention began at 1:09 p.m. when a Sûreté du Québec officer observed a vehicle driving at a high speed.

The officer turned the patrol vehicle around and began a pursuit, the BEI said in a statement.

During that pursuit, the officer lost sight of the vehicle on several occasions.

The man behind the wheel of the fleeing vehicle allegedly struck and damaged several civilian vehicles during the pursuit. The BEI report does not specify the man's age.

The pursuit ended with collision between the pursued vehicle and a civilian vehicle on Route 365, the statement said.

Three people were taken to hospital, including the driver of the fleeing vehicle who suffered serious injuries.

The BEI says Quebec City's police service will be supporting the investigation.

Saint-Basile is in the Portneuf region, about 220 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
