Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that he had ordered 10 foreign ambassadors who called for the release of a jailed philanthropist to be declared persona non grata, including Canada's Jamal Khokhar. The envoys, including the U.S., French and German representatives in Ankara, issued a statement earlier this week calling for a resolution to the case of Osman Kavala, a businessman and philanthropist held in prison since 2017 despite not having been convicted of a crime. LONDON (Reuters) -Italy's government and UniCredit are preparing to call off negotiations over the sale of ailing bank Monte dei Paschi (MPS) after efforts to reach an agreement over a costly recapitalisation plan failed, two sources told Reuters. Italy has long seen a merger with a stronger peer as the best solution for the Tuscan bank, which has plans to raise 2.5 billion euros ($2.9 billion) in capital next year. But the sources said the terms of a potential sale agreed by UniCredit and Italy's Treasury when they entered exclusive negotiations on July 29 have made the merger plan too costly an alternative to a stand-alone recapitalisation.
Though triaging of Saskatchewan ICU patients is already happening to some degree in hospitals overburdened by the fourth wave of COVID-19, an official with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) says decisions about who gets admitted into an ICU could intensify in the days to come. In the early days of the pandemic, Saskatchewan's health-care system enacted an ethical triaging framework for deciding who would and would not be admitted into an ICU at a time when intensive-care beds are in short

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — The two women seeking the lieutenant governor's office in Virginia next month are fond of touting their unconventional political backgrounds. One thing is certain: Whichever one wins will be making history. Either candidate would be the first woman as well as the first woman of color to serve in a post that frequently serves as a launching pad to the governor’s mansion. Half of the past 10 lieutenant governors went on to become governor. The two will compete for votes on

Israel on Friday designated six Palestinian civil society groups as terrorist organisations and accused them of funnelling donor aid to militants, a move that drew criticism from the United Nations and human rights watchdogs. Israel's defence ministry said the groups had ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP), a left-wing faction with an armed wing that has carried out deadly attacks against Israelis. The groups include Palestinian human rights organisations Addameer and Al-Haq, which document alleged rights violations by both Israel and the Western-backed Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank.
THREE RIVERS, Calif. (AP) — In the wake of California wildfires, upwards of 10,000 trees weakened by fires, drought, disease or age must be removed, work that will keep a nearby highway closed to visitors who seek the world’s two largest sequoia trees. The hazard trees could potentially fall onto people and cars on the section of State Route 180 known as Generals Highway, or they could create barriers for emergency and fire response, the Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks said Friday. The h

Ernie Hudson said two of the planned three units are now operational, based in Summerside and Charlottetown, and they have responded to eight calls across the province since Monday. A third unit based in Kings County is to join them later. The province originally announced it was developing the service with federal funding in 2018. In January 2021, Health PEI said it was preparing to la

Burnley's fourth draw of the season keeps it in the relegation zone with fellow winless clubs Newcastle and Norwich after nine games. Cornet, s

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A San Jose, California woman born in India was one of two foreign tourists killed in the apparent crossfire of a drug-gang shootout in Mexico’s Caribbean coast resort of Tulum. OTTAWA — Some Kabul safe houses, where hundreds of Afghans who helped the Canadian military and non-governmental organizations are waiting to flee to Canada, are set to be closed in two weeks because of lack of funding.
