Belleville still faces record floods as water level drops
Water levels in the Belleville area peaked overnight, officials say, but the southern Ontario town and surrounding municipalities of Foxboro, Tweed and Actinolite will continue to battle floods over the Easter weekend.
The area is experiencing its worst flooding in a century from an overflow of the Moira River. But hundreds of volunteers — who have helped sandbag homes in neighbouring Foxboro — were told Friday they aren't needed for the time being, because the water levels are dropping.
The Moira is expected to return to normal levels within a week, however it is still at or near a record high. The Quinte conservation authority says levels of the Salmon and Trent rivers are currently rising.
Belleville was put under a state of emergency earlier this month over the flooding, which has affected hundreds of homes in the region.
A string of municipalities stretching from north of Toronto through to the province's east are under flood warnings or watches due to the spring snow melt and recent rainfall.
