Ben Affleck confirmed to return to Mallrats 2, according to Kevin Smith

Ben Affleck is set to return to his Mallrats role in the film's sequel, according to director Kevin Smith.

Affleck played Shannon Hamilton in the 1995 comedy, which is set in Smith's View Askewniverse, and his character ended up being sent to prison for statutory rape after he had sex with 15-year-old Tricia Jones (Renee Humphrey).

However, Shannon is apparently set to make a comeback in upcoming sequel Twilight of the Mallrats, with Smith telling Jason Mewes during a Twitch livestream that he has spoken to Affleck and that he is interested in reprising the character.

"He's written in there – Shannon Hamilton's in there, and the actual guy told me he's into it, so fingers crossed, it's looking good," he said.

Smith also confirmed that the original film's end-credits sequence, which gave us a glimpse at the futures of the main characters, will be addressed, saying that "everything comes into play".

Mallrats follows college student T.S. Quint (Jeremy London) who turns to his best friend Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee) when he is dumped by girlfriend Brandi Svenning (Claire Forlani).

After they decide to hang out at the mall, they get involved in a series of scrapes, asking local slackers Jay and Silent Bob (Mewes and Smith) to destroy the stage of a gameshow and getting involved in the messy situation between Shannon and Tricia.

The sequel will catch up with the characters later on, with the film's end credits showing T.S. and Brandi getting married, Brodie becoming host of The Tonight Show and Shannon going to jail.

It is not yet clear which other cast members will return, but Smith wrote on Twitter earlier this year that Shannen Doherty (who played Rene Mosier) had read and "loved" the script and that actress Aparna Brielle has signed up to play Brodie's daughter Banner Bruce.
