Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro Dropped by SNL to Parody the Mueller Investigation

These political cold opens are getting weird.

Meet the Parents is an at-best functional movie that came out eighteen years ago, but that didn't stop the powers that be at Saturday Night Live from deciding now is the time to evoke it in what must be one of the show's strangest political cold opens in a while, enlisting the talents of the film's stars, Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro.

Stiller played Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, while De Niro inexplicably stopped by to take up the reins as Robert Mueller: political McGuffin. The two recreated Meet the Parents's famous lie detector scene in a wish-fulfillment enactment of Mueller's ongoing investigation into the Trump administration.

Charitably, it's not searing stuff, and honestly feels more like an excuse for De Niro to say a word approximate to "fuckers" on live TV while getting some weeks-old Stormy Daniels jokes in at the same time. But, hey, who doesn't love an SNL celebrity cameo?
