Betsina ends N.W.T. Canada Games medal drought, Yukon's Pettitt golden

It took eight long years, but the Northwest Territories has finally ended its medal drought at the Canada Games.

Eighteen-year-old Brent Betsina, from Yellowknife, took home a silver medal last night in the men's over 100 kg category in judo.

Betsina, a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, is the first athlete from the Northwest Territories to bring home a medal from the Canada Games since 2007, in Whitehorse.

That medal, a gold, was won by Hay River's Brendan Green in cross country skiing. Green went on to represent Canada at the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Games.

Yukon's Pettitt golden

Hours earlier, the Yukon added to their impressive medal total after Whitehorse's Rachel Pettitt won gold in women's figure skating.

The fifteen-year-old Pettitt stood first in the competition following Tuesday's short program skate, and was able to hold her position in Thursday's free skate, winning the third gold medal for the Yukon at the Games, along with skiiers Annah Hanthorn and Knute Johnsgaard.

The Yukon's medal total now stands at seven at this year's competition. Last week, biathlete Nadia Moser took home three medals, and cross-country skiiers Hanthorn and Johnsgaard were joined on the podium by teammate Kendra Murray, who took home a bronze.

The Canada Winter Games wraps up on Sunday in Prince George.
