Bette Midler Sells Land Parcel on Kauai for $1.85 Million
Bette Midler just made a substantial profit on a 1.34-acre parcel of land that she bought back in 1986. According to public records reviewed by The Los Angeles Times, the Honolulu-born singer and actress recently sold a conservation-zoned plot of land located on the north shore of Kauai for $1.85 million, or 12 times what she originally paid for it ($150,000).
The buyer is a partner of Discovery Land Company, a developer responsible for multiple luxury residential private club communities across North America. According to a 1988 Los Angeles Times article, the land Midler sold features many different topographies, including flat pastures and wooded hillsides, with a large swimming pool fed by a natural waterfall. At the time, there was a partially complete three-story home on the site that featured distinctive round windows and a roof, with a large deck situated on the top floor. Midler still owns several other plots of land on Kauai, including a sprawling 38-acre property in the Kilauea area.
The Beaches star also has real estate holdings in Manhattan and Los Angeles. Her New York penthouse, located on an enviable block of Fifth Avenue facing Central Park, was put on the market for $50 million last fall. The expansive 7,000-square-foot home comprises three floors of a famous Emery Roth–designed building and boasts a total of 14 rooms, including a 70-foot open-plan entertaining space with a dining area, a living room, and renovated eat-in kitchen.
In 2014, Midler told Architectural Digest that bringing her love for greenery and natural light to the big city has been integral to the way that she’s decorated the space. “If you live in the kind of apartment that most people do, you’d want to go sit on a park bench, too,” she said at the time. “I lived that way for years when I moved to New York. People suffer from the lack of light in this town. There aren’t enough windows!”
