Biden news: Cindy McCain to back Democratic nominee after Trump’s attacks on her late husband
Cindy McCain, the widow of Republican Senator and former GOP presidential candidate John McCain, will endorse Joe Biden in the 2020 race, the candidate announced.
With his campaign underway, the Democratic presidential candidate has been targeted in a disinformation campaign supported by Russian president Vladimir Putin, according to US intelligence agencies as reported by several news outlets.
A top-secret Central Intelligence Agency assessment has claimed that the Russian leader is directing Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Derkach to dissemenate damaging information about Mr Biden through lobbyists, Congress, the media and contacts close to Donald Trump.
The former vice president has meanwhile refused to be drawn on whether, as president, he would simply create more positions for judges in the US Supreme Court to neutralise the effect of Donald Trump’s rush to push through a replacement for the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The president and Mr Biden are set to face off in their first scheduled debate on 29 September in Ohio.
Moderator Chris Wallace will discuss with the candidates the future if the Supreme Court, the Covid-29 response, the economy, “race and violence in our cities” and election integrity.
Vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris is preparing for her own debate with Mike Pence by tapping former candidate Pete Buttigieg to play the VP in mock debates, Bloomberg has reported.
Those candidates are set to debate on 7 October at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. USA Today’s Washington bureau chief Susan Page will moderate.
