Black People Are Getting Texts Saying They've Been "Selected To Pick Cotton At The Nearest Plantation," And Yes This Is Real

*Sigh.* Black people around the US are sharing screenshots of texts they received from unknown numbers, all of which direct them to report to the "nearest plantation" and "pick cotton."

The first messages appeared hours after this year's presidential election came to an end with Donald Trump's win.

In full, one of the text messages reads: "Greetings Jaime, You have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Be ready at 3PM SHARP with your belongings. Our Executive Slaves will come get you in a Brown Van, be prepared to be searched down once you enter the plantation. You are in Plantation Group B."

The message was shared by X user @outofmoss, who said, "Ummmm why'd I get a text from a random number about being sent to a plantation ??? wtf." Further, the message addressed them by name.

In another screenshot shared by @casketprettyyy on X, the message instructs recipients to "pack sturdy shoes," saying, "Sir masters will pat you down before entry make sure you pack some sturdy shoes and a trash bag for the cotton thank you."

"i'm genuinely just terrified. I don't like that i keep seeing multiple people are receiving text messages telling them they will be taken back to a plantation or that they'll be raped. I feel so uneasy bro. what the fuck is this," @casketprettyyy captioned the image.

Other messages include mentions of Trump, like this one that reads: "MORNING NEGRO BREED As you know Donald J Trump has won the election, with that being said you have been selected to perform in SECTION 487 at George Pickett cotton picking plantation."

Given the timing of the messages, many are drawing connections between their racist rhetoric and president-elect Trump's openly racist remarks during rallies, as well as his part in uplifting white supremacists. "This is the America you voted for and it's been ONE DAY," one person wrote.

According to NBC News, many recipients are college students, with reports coming out of Ohio State University, Clemson University in South Carolina, the University of Southern California, and Missouri State University.

"Black students at the University of Alabama randomly getting texts/emails saying they have been selected to pick cotton on the plantation but everything is gonna be normal right," this person challenged.

In response to the messages, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a statement: "The unfortunate reality of electing a President who, historically has embraced, and at times encouraged hate, is unfolding before our eyes. These messages represent an alarming increase in vile and abhorrent rhetoric from racist groups across the country, who now feel emboldened to spread hate and stoke the flames of fear that many of us are feeling after Tuesday's election results."

"We've said it before and we'll say it again - there is no place for hate in a democracy. The threat — and the mention of slavery in 2024 — is not only deeply disturbing, but perpetuates a legacy of evil that dates back to before the Jim Crow era, and now seeks to prevent Black Americans from enjoying the same freedom to pursue life, liberty, and happiness.

These actions are not normal. And we refuse to let them be normalized. The NAACP was founded in the spirit of liberation and progress, bringing otherized communities together to fight for a brighter tomorrow. That spirit lives on as we continue to fight for the safety, security, and prosperity of all people. Freedom is on the horizon, and we won't be fear mongered out of the future we deserve."

We'll keep you updated with any developments.
