Blake Lively Held Space for ‘Defying Gravity’ in Towering Ruby Red Platforms

There’s no place like Blake Lively’s closet.

On December 3, Blake Lively showcased her relentless talent for method dressing at a special screening of Wicked in New York City. For the occasion, the actor paired a simple pair of light wash jeans with a white blazer, ramping up the drama with her choice of accessories.

If the red poppies embroidered on the 37-year-old actor’s white blouse and Chanel purse were not enough of a nod to the film, she paid homage to the original Wizard of Oz with a pair of baby blue socks and gravity-defying red crystal platform heels.

She topped everything off with a series of emerald green rings.

Of course, Blake Lively’s very own Fiyero was also in attendance. Ryan Reynolds, who never fails to match his wife’s energy when it comes to a theme, was dressed in a suede shirt jacket and trousers in a shade one might be able to describe as straw-like. IYKYK.

Dancing through life, indeed.

In fact, I’d argue both Lively and Reynolds were more heavy-handed with their references than the film’s lead witches. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were in attendance wearing some of their most subtle Elphaba and Glinda-coded looks to date, though Erivo still rocked Ephie’s signature green and black.

Do you think this is Blake Lively’s bid to play Dorothy in the second part of Wicked? If so, she may be sad to learn that the movie has already been filmed—and that those famed ruby slippers are silver in Wicked, per the original Wizard of Oz books by L. Frank Baum.

Either way, I can’t get over this photo of Blake Lively standing an entire head taller than Grande and Erivo, who was wearing a pair of platform boots of her own. Tall girls, this is your sign to embrace the sparkly heels of your dreams. Just don’t forget to click your heels three times when you’re ready to go home…and then call an Uber.

Entertainment

Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, and Jonathan Bailey will all return.
