Blizzard warning for west coast, rain and wind warning in south

Despite sunshine on the Avalon, a blizzard warning is in effect for the western half of Newfoundland, while the southern portion of the island is under a rain and wind advisory.

According to Environment Canada, wind warnings are in effect for the Wreckhouse area on Sunday afternoon and into the evening, with wind gusts upwards of 150 km/h.

Heavy and blowing snow is expected to spread northeastward to central and northern regions of the island by Sunday evening.

Areas like Green Bay-White Bay can expect gusty winds and low visibility. Between 15 and 40 centimetres of snow is expected to fall before tapering off or turning to rain showers overnight and into Monday morning.

Labrador to get snow

In Labrador, an intensifying low pressure system is set to approach from the south on Sunday night. Snow, at times heavy, is expected to develop along the Strait on Sunday evening and spread north through the night.

From Makkovik to L'Anse-au-Clair, strong winds and cold temperatures will cause white-out conditions, which are expected to persist into Monday night. Road closures are possible.
