B.C. man generates U.S. buzz for letter deriding Americans for voting Republican

A letter to the editor of the Detroit Free Press, by a Canadian, is generating some buzz in United States.

In the letter, published on Monday, Richard Brunt who claims to be from Victoria, B.C. says that Canadians are confused by the outcome of last week’s U.S. mid-term elections which saw the Republicans re-take control of Congress.

"Consider, right now in America, corporate profits are at record highs, the country’s adding 200,000 jobs per month, unemployment is below 6 per cent, U.S. gross national product growth is the best of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries," he wrote.

"The dollar is at its strongest levels in years, the stock market is near record highs, gasoline prices are falling, there’s no inflation, interest rates are the lowest in 30 years, U.S. oil imports are declining, U.S. oil production is rapidly increasing, the deficit is rapidly declining, and the wealthy are still making astonishing amounts of money.

"So, Americans vote for the party that got you into the mess that Obama just dug you out of? This defies reason. When you are done with Obama, could you send him our way?"

Brunt’s post has more than 17,000 Facebook likes at the Detroit Free Press website and has even been picked-up by one anti-GOP website.

Of course, Republicans in the United States, will give you a very different story about why Obama’s Democrats have fizzled with two year’s left in the President’s term.

They’ll say despite his great speaking ability he hasn’t really been able to push forward his agenda in a very dysfunctional U.S. capital. They deride him for fumbling and mumbling his way through very important files including Obamacare and the Keystone XL pipeline. And, with regard to foreign policy they say, he’s been utterly inept.

They blame him for failing to prevent Vladimir Putin from destabilizing eastern Ukraine, doing nothing to stop the Assad regime in Syria, prematurely pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan and being to slow to react to the ISIS and Ebola threats.

Nevertheless, there’s a lot of Canadians, like Brunt, who have a strong affinity towards the charismatic U.S. President.

A recent Ekos Research/iPolitics survey, supports that.

In fact, the poll released in August, suggests that Obama is the most popular politician in Canada more so than Thomas Mulcair, Kathleen Wynne and even Justin Trudeau.

Frank Graves, President of Ekos Research, notes that while Obama’s popularity in Canada has dropped a little, he still remains “enormously” popular.

"What is driving it is a bit of leader-envy for a cool, funny and progressive leader — against the decidedly uncool, stiff and cranky leader we have," he told Yahoo Canada News in August.

"I think most Canadians find themselves increasingly at odds with a leader who clearly espouses right-wing values which are increasingly in a state of tension with a clear public movement away from small-c conservative values.

"In short , I think Barrack Obama has become something of a poster child for lost liberal aspirations in Canada — despite his problems with Americans."
