Canadians praise B.C. and Alberta, critical of Quebec in ‘best and worst province’ poll

This may not serve any other purpose than for national bragging rights but it's interesting none the less.

Abacus Data has come out with its second annual 'best and worst provinces' poll. They asked 999 people across the country to rate all the provinces and like last year, this year's poll shows that west is best.

British Columbia and Alberta scored highest on the top-line categories: Alberta got best marks for "best managed", "lowest taxes" and "best place to open a business." B.C. won the distinction of having "the most beautiful scenery" and being the province "Canadians would most like to visit."

On the other end of the scale, Canadians seem to have a low opinion of Quebec. La Belle Province was voted the "worst managed" and the "worst place to open a business."

Four out of ten Canadians also said that Quebec had the "least friendly" people.

Maybe the language police, a turban ban for soccer players and their proposed secular charter has something to do with that?

The "most friendly" people — according to the respondents of this survey — live in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Abacus Data CEO David Coletto says that the results of the survey don't surprise him but he noted that some perceptions are far from reality.

"Ontario has some of the lowest personal income taxes but many Canadians still think it has the highest," he told Yahoo! Canada News.

"Newfoundland and Labrador comes second on worst place to start a business is a surprise. It's now a have province but its still has some work to do to change perceptions about its business climate."

The full results of the survey can be found here.
